Born in Tokyo in 1972. He made his kabuki debut at the age of eight. He won several awards including the Best Newcomer award at 2003 Japanese Academy Awards for his performance in his first film "Ping Pong". Since then, he has starred in numerous films, including "Like Asura" (2003) directed by Yoshimitsu Morita, "Letters from Iwo Jima" (2006) directed by Clint Eastwood, "Red Cliff" series (2008 and 2009) directed by John Woo, as well as TV dramas.
