Maja is an overweight and clumsy 18-year-old, who lives in a small town in Sweden. Feeling misunderstood and unappreciated, she craves attention and dreams of becoming an actress. Erika, a struggling 28-year-old documentary filmmaker from Stockholm, offers to shoot a film about Maja, but her hidden purpose is to make an entertaining tragicomedy at the expense of Maja. With strong performances by the cast and simple and powerful storytelling by writer and director Teresa Fabik, “Starring Maja” is a moving teen drama that inevitably makes you feel good.
